History

christmassanctuary2008.jpgLiving Savior has a long and interesting history. Our congregation had its start in 1977 when two families met in their homes for worship. As the group grew, they were served by area pastors from Knoxville, Columbia and Greenville. "Our Savior Lutheran Church" was born and a building was purchased on Oakland Street in Hendersonville. From 1979 until 1998 they were served by several different pastors, including semi-retired pastors for the last nine of those years. Our Savior grew steadily throughout those years.

In 1998 a decision was made relocate to the Arden/Fletcher/Mills River areas. In 2000 Pastor John Qualmann arrived, and the relocation effort started. A new name, Living Savior Lutheran Church, was chosen, and a temporary worship facility was found, the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Long Shoals Road.  April 8, 2001, was the Grand Opening for Living Savior. The Groce chapel would serve as the Sunday morning meeting place for over six years.

As that group grew in numbers, the need for a local Ministry Center was filled in the former Grange Community Building on Overlook Road (land once owned by George Washington Vanderbilt). After renovating and then purchasing that property, a new church was built in 2006-07.  It was dedicated on June 3, 2007. Living Savior Preschool opened its doors that September.

After years of continued steady growth, Living Savior-located just one mile from I-26-is now a permanent fixture to serve people in the south Asheville area, as well as north Henderson County, parts of Transylvania County and even Haywood County.
